How to make this Mother’s Day special
For the moms in your home…
There’s no doubt we’ll all be missing many hugs, kisses and moments spent together this Mother’s Day. But even though many traditions are being set aside as we stay home and practice social distancing, there are still lots of ways to connect and show our gratitude for our moms. Whether you’re looking for ways to make the day special for a mom who’s been cooped up with the kids, or you won’t be able to visit with your mom or grandma this year, here are some special ways to show the moms in your life how loved they truly are.
1. Keep up the breakfast in bed tradition - with a smart twist
There’s no better way to start off Mother’s Day than with breakfast in bed made by the kids. But after weeks at home with the family, we think mom deserves to sleep in on her special day. So, make a breakfast dish that has to bake a while, like a frittata or casserole, and while it’s in the oven, challenge the kids to stay quiet as you read them a story or put on a movie. It’s guaranteed to give mom that extra bit of shuteye.
2. Pick up a plant now rather than flowers
While some florists are taking orders for curbside pick-up, in many cases, you had to order early since production isn’t what it normally would be given the current physical distancing rules. A great alternative is to pick up some seasonal plants or a pretty potted hanging basket from a garden Centre. Bonus: She’ll get to enjoy these flowers a whole lot longer.
3. Giver her a spa day at home
Every mom loves a little me-time and pampering, so why not give her both? You can easily transform a bathroom into a spa-like experience in no time. Dress the space with flowers or plants, lots of candles, her best skincare products arranged on a pretty tray, a book or magazine, and a glass of her favourite drink.
To really make it special, create a custom bath salt blend made with Epsom salt, pink sea salt, her favourite essential oil and/or dried flowers or herbs, like calming chamomile and rosemary (tip: raid the loose-leaf herbal tea stash). And make a custom playlist of her favourite chill tunes or soothing sounds. Don’t forget fluffy towels and a luxe body moisturizer, too.
4. Think local when it comes to gifts
Lots of independent retailers are offering curbside pick-up, and buying local means you’re helping people in your community stay in business. You can find all sorts of special gifts for mom locally, from jewelry and journals to pretty pajamas and books.
5. Pick up mom's favourite dinner
Food is love, so cap off mom’s special day (and make your life easier) by getting takeout from her favourite restaurant for dinner. If it’s a local spot, your dinner choice has the added bonus of supporting a small business owner.
For the moms you can't see in person...
1. Schedule a video call or party
While it’s not the same as being together, a virtual party or video chat lets you see the people you love and that’s special too. If multiple people are joining in, make sure everyone knows how to use the app you’ve chosen, and the format works for elderly relatives—for example, if grandma has a hard time hearing or following conversations, a smaller group video chat is probably better.
2. Share an experience
Just because you’re apart doesn’t mean you can’t have a shared experience. We love the idea of you and your mom each taking a walk while on a video chat so you can share in what you’re seeing as you wander your respective neighbourhoods or nearby trails. Or if you opt to stay in, you can have a virtual movie night or do a virtual museum or gallery tour together.
3. Suprize her with a special gift
If you’ve missed the window of opportunity to order a gift or flowers to be delivered by Sunday, it’s time to think outside the box. We love the idea of a subscription box that will arrive at her doorstep. Or how about treating mom to a special Mother’s Day grocery order of nothing but her favourite decadent treats and special snacks? Virtual experiences, like an online specialty cooking class or a Masterclass or Skillshare subscription, also make great gifts.
4. Make plans together
Think about what you and your mom love to do together and spend some time on Mother’s Day making plans for doing that very thing once social distancing rules are relaxed. It could be as elaborate as a big vacation or as simple as a hike followed by a meandering drive home—what matters most is the time you’ll spend together.
Keep in mind that these days, even the best laid plans can sometimes go awry. If all else fails, just call. Moms love it when you call.
We wish you a very happy and special Mother’s Day filled with joy, laughter and LOVE.
To all our wonderful mothers, Happy Mother’s Day.
